How to improve performance of IIS on symantec SMP

Some NS performance tips

Before consider the ideas to improve the performance mind what the SMP Implementation Guide says:

  • Symantec does not recommend that you install SQL Server on a virtual
    computer.
  • When Notification Server is installed on a virtual computer, the data loader
    show performance degradation (approximately 25%).

Some ideas to improve the SMP performance

  • Improving IIS and Notification Server response times by disabling debug mode using disableweb.exe. Article URL http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO6940. Download the DisableWebDebug_7.x.zip, extract, and execute disablewebdebug.exe /fix.
  • Defrag regularly the drives of your SMP Server and SQL Server to have a better I/O.
  • Creating a maintenance plan in SQL Server 2005 or 2008 to optimize database performance: Article URL http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO8589
  • On the SQL Server set Windows’ memory usage to favor Programs over System Cache. SQL Server does its own data caching to improve performance, and the more memory reserved for its use, the more efficient its caching can be. What Is Root Hints?

If the DNS server does not know the address of the requested site, then it will forward the request to another DNS server. In order to do so, the DNS server must know of the IP address of another DNS server that it can forward the request to. This is the job of root hints. Root hints provides a list of IP addresses of DNS servers that are considered to be authoritative at the root level of the DNS hierarchy(also known as root name server).

The good news is that root hints are preconfigured on Windows Server 2003 DNS servers. The root hints are stored in a file named cache.dns that is located in the WindowsSystem32Dns folder. If you would like to see what the root hints file looks like, you can open it in Notepad. The root hints file is really nothing more than just a text file that pairs root DNS servers with their IP addresses.
